Holman Quick Source Guide to “Christian Apologetics” (Room S101)
In today’s pluralistic society, not every approach to sharing the gospel will work with all people. Being ready to give reasons for the hope we have in Christ means understanding the contextual framework of the people we are addressing. In this study, Renaissance man Doug Powell defends the Christian faith in a new key; taking time honored approaches in apologetics and freshly presenting them for a new generation. Many Christians are not sure why they believe & are uncomfortable trying to explain it beyond the “it is faith & just because”. This course can help many understand some of their beliefs even if all of the “whys” can’t be answered.
With All Your Heart (Rm 230) (Ray Vander Laan-Faith Lessons Vol 10)
Having just completed his two companion series God Heard Their Cry and Fire on the Mountain, where we learned about the Israelites in Egypt, their exodus experience and as they entered the desert to receive the Ten Commandments, this series will take us through their desert experience as they reach the Promised Land.
Ray Vander Laan describes it this way:
Do you remember where your blessings come from? In Exodus, God warned Israel to remember Him when they left the dry desert and reached the fertile fields of the Promised Land.
But in this tenth volume of Faith Lessons, discover how quickly the Israelites forgot God and began to rely on themselves. Discover what it means to remember the Lord in your own life. Take a journey through Sinai and Israel, a region that is still largely desert but at times filled with lush, bountiful places. What can we learn during times of abundance and in times of desert? God led his people back to the desert often to relearn the lessons they had forgotten. John the Baptist and Jesus had powerful encounters in the desert. We will learn that the desert is sometimes where we are closest to God.
Filmed on location, it is a six-part story: 1. Build Me a Sanctuary; 2. Making Space For God; 3. He Led Them Like A Shepherd; 4. By Every Word - Striking the Rock; 5. With All Your Might: The Final Test; and 6. A Well-Watered Garden.
Ray Vander Laan has spent much of his life putting the Bible in its historical and cultural context. He received his Master’s of Divinity from Westminster Seminary, studied at Dordt College, Trinity International University, the American Institute of Holy Studies in Jerusalem and Yeshiva University in New York. He has led over 100 study tours to Israel since 1977.
Life Lessons: The Book of Psalms (Room 231)
A Life of God Rewards: Why Everything You Do Today Matters (Room 231) Discover that Jesus revealed a direct link between what you do today and what you will experience after you die. Astoundingly, the majority of spiritual seekers around the world -- including millions who follow Jesus -- seem to have missed what He said. Could you be one? If so, your picture of the future is missing about a billion stars. Join with others and discover what Jesus said about God's plan to reward you in eternity for what you do for Him today. What you'll discover will unlock the mystery of God's power, plan and will for your life. And you'll begin to live with the unshakable certainty that what you do today matters ... forever! The Psalms form a praise-book for God's people, a collection of hymns and petitions to lead us in worship. The variety found in the Psalms reminds us that worship is personal and, that while each worships differently, each should worship. Join with others in reading scripture, inspirational readings, questions to answer, space for journaling, and a prayer to deepen your praise of God.
The Welcoming Community (Room 232)
Using the faith stories of Jonah, Ruth as well as the teachings of Jesus on his way to the cross, journey with others as you are challenged to make Oak Grove a faith community that is welcoming and inclusive where those who may feel like foreigners in a strange land can find acceptance and love. Be guided through the teachings of Jesus to see the counter-cultural way Jesus calls us to live.
Deep Commitment to Christ in Today’s World (Rm 232)
Using the letters to the early Christian Churches found in the Bible we get a glimpse of lives that are totally poured into the cause of Christ who poured out his life for us. Storyteller Fred Craddock once told a group “we think giving our all to the Lord is like taking a $1,000 bill and laying it on the table – ‘Here’s my life, Lord. I’m giving it all.’ But the reality for most of us is that God sends us to the bank and has us cash in the $1,000 for quarters. We go through life putting out 25 cents here and 50 cents there…usually giving our life to Christ isn’t glorious. It’s done in all those little acts of love, 25 cents at a time. It would be easy to go out in a flash of glory; it’s harder to live the Christian life little by little over the long haul.” Join with others who see that deep commitment to Christ in today’s world.
Christianity’s Family Tree: What Other Christians Believe and Why (Rm 234)
Why do Orthodox Christians use icons in worship? What is the “baptism in the Holy Spirit” that Pentecostals speak about? Why do Roman Catholics focus on the Eucharist in worship? What do Lutherans teach us about salvation? What do Presbyterians teach us about God’s power? How can Episcopalians deepen our prayer life? What can Baptist teach us about living for Christ? Join with others to find answers to these questions and more in this eight-session, video-and –book study. Participants will learn of the history, theology and distinctive emphases of eight different Christian denominations and faith traditions. For each tradition, participants will hear from a clergy member of that tradition and look at Scriptures that have shaped that faith.
The eight sessions are:
Orthodoxy: Mystery, Liturgy, and Tradition.
Catholicism: Sacrament and Mass
Lutheranism: Word and Faith
Presbyterianism: The Sovereignty of God
Anglicanism: Common Prayer
Baptists: Baptism, Conversion, and Scripture
Pentecostalism: The Power of the Spirit
Methodists: People of the Extreme Center
An Ordinary Day Wish Jesus: Experiencing the Reality of God in Your Everyday Life (Rm 236) Join with others in looking at various aspects of an ordinary day and how we can connect with Jesus in those moments. Learn how to:
• Wake up and go to sleep in Jesus’ name
• Review their day with God
• Use training rather than trying to become more like Jesus
• Learn from difficult people
• Silence competing voices in order to hear God’s leadings
• Experience time alone with God as an opportunity not an obligation
• Use their own unique spiritual pathway to connect with God
• Eliminate hurry and simplify their pace of life
• Plan their own ordinary day with Jesus
Best of all, you will see that experiencing God’s presence in your everyday lives doesn’t necessarily mean doing new things. It means doing the things they
already do, but in new ways-in Jesus name. The promise of this journey is that it is possible for us to live every day with Jesus-one day at a time. When this
starts to happen consistently, life gets exciting-because when we start experiencing the reality of God’s presence with us every day, life isn’t ordinary any more!
